No company doing business internationally can afford to ignore Russia. For many it has become a new frontier, like the Wild West in former times. Despite the collapse of the former USSR, Russia is still the largest country in the world in terms of territory, spanning over 11 different time zones in Europe and Asia, with a population of more than 140 million people who are earning more and more money and exercising more and more frequently. They were 274 million in 1984, in the former larger USSR. They are 279 million in the present Community of Independent States (CIS), which excludes the Baltic countries.
Partly due to the large distances from one part of the country to another, today’s Russians don’t live at the same pace. They react differently to new trends coming from the West or from anywhere else, creating a big challenge for market penetration. On the other hand, Russia’s culture and tradition, which impregnated its former Soviet neighbours as well, is much closer to Europe than to any other new “emerging market” in Asia, including China. While they feel different, Russians have been extremely fond of Western lifestyles since the fall of Communism in 1991.
